Two tiny puppies are recovering at an animal shelter after a gang of children beat them and tried to roast them on a bonfire.Cinders and Guy were kicked and held over a bonfire by kids. A passer by came to the rescue when she spotted the children, some as young as 10, kicking the puppies and holding them over the fire. Melanie Johnson grabbed the terrified animals from the children, who ran away from the scene in Newbold near Rochdale. "I just could not believe the cruelty being shown by these kids. If I had not turned up, I think they would have burned the dogs alive," she said. The seven-week-old pups are now being treated at the RSPCA animal shelter in Rochdale. The shelter manager Jean Spencer told Sky News: "When Cinders and Guy (the puppies) came to us they were in a complete state of shock - very quiet and subdued, not at all how puppies should be. "Cinders, the female, had singe marks on her head and Guy, the male, we later discovered had a hernia. "I cannot thank Melanie enough for saving these dogs. If she had not intervened, they would surely be dead." RSPCA inspector Alison Wilkinson said: "The RSPCA is investigating this incident and wants to hear from anyone who has any specific information about what happened as soon as possible."
